We’re excited, too! You can make sure you’re getting the most out of your treatment by taking excellent care of your Invisalign retainers. Keep these four tips in mind and you’ll be enjoying your straighter smile in no time!

Pomona Invisalign: 4 Top Maintenance Tips

Copy them down, print them out, write them on your mind — however you do it, take heed of these four tips from the Cosmetic Dentistry Associates for the best results as you embark on your Invisalign treatment!

#1: Clean well and often

Every time you brush your teeth, you should also be brushing your Invisalign retainers. After all, they get almost as much exposure to bacteria throughout the day as your natural teeth. And not only that, but any plaque and leftover food particles in the aligners are held closely against your teeth and gums, encouraging rapid decay and possible infection.

#2: Avoid the heat

The Invisalign retainers are made of plastic, so it’s not surprising that they don’t stand up well to high temperatures. Make sure you’re cleaning your aligners with room temperature water to prevent them from warping or losing their excellent fit. If you forget or accidentally expose your trays to warm or hot water, schedule an appointment with your dentist to make sure they still just fit like they should.

#3: Don’t soak in mouthwash

You may be tempted to eliminate or prevent odor by soaking your Invisalign retainer with mouthwash, but don’t do it. Mouthwashes have pigment which your retainer will absorb — and then your teeth will look Cool Mint green, too. Remember that the best way to avoid odor in your retainer is through diligent brushing and cleaning.

#4: Hold onto your old retainers

Once you’re ready to advance to the next stage in the treatment, we recommend that you thoroughly clean your old retainer and store it in a cool, dry place. Sometimes patients need to revisit a previous tray throughout their treatment, so it’s easiest if you’ve still got the original.
