What’s the Difference Between Crowns & Veneers?

At Cosmetic Dentistry Associates, we treat patients presenting with a wide variety of dental concerns. Providing comprehensive cosmetic and restorative dental services is one of our main goals as a practice. Dental crowns and porcelain veneers are two dental solutions that we commonly provide for our patients. While these two services may seem very similar, they are actually very different. Here are some things to know about porcelain veneers and dental crowns:

Porcelain Veneers

We primarily provide porcelain veneers to patients who desire a complete smile makeover. This is because they are the premier cosmetic dentistry solution. Porcelain veneers are designed as thin, ceramic shells that are firmly secured to the front-facing portion of your natural tooth. This requires only a small amount of enamel removal to make space for the veneers. Porcelain veneers are great for concealing minor blemishes like gaps, chips, stains, or cracks. While more extensive dental damages will require more invasive care, porcelain veneers are an excellent option to quickly restore the appearance and aesthetics of your natural smile.

Dental Crowns

When you suffer from severe dental damages like chips or cracks, your tooth’s functionality is at risk. Severe chips and cracks affect more than just the way your smile looks but also how your smile is able to effectively allow you to chew and talk. To help our patients who suffer from significant dental damage, we often try to repair broken teeth with dental crowns. Dental crowns are designed to be a prosthetic tooth that sits on the foundational core of your natural tooth, similar to a cap. Basically, your natural tooth’s exterior is completely shaved down to only its essential middle part to hold the crown in place. While this procedure is more invasive than a porcelain veneer, it allows patients to restore the functionality of a broken tooth without requiring a tooth extraction.
