The term “deep cleaning” sounds intense. It brings to mind scrub brushes, heavy pressure, and maybe a little discomfort. If you’ve heard those two words from your dentist and felt your stomach drop, you’re not alone. But a deep cleaning sounds way scarier than it actually is. And more importantly, it’s one of the best things you can do for your long-term oral health.
A regular cleaning is what you get at your standard checkup. We remove plaque and tartar above your gum line. We polish your teeth. You leave feeling fresh and smooth.
A deep cleaning is different. It goes below the gum line to clean the roots of your teeth. That’s where the trouble really starts.
A regular cleaning is like mopping the kitchen floor. A deep cleaning is like scrubbing the grout between the tiles. Both are cleaning. But one goes deeper to remove the gunk that builds up over time.
Deep cleanings aren’t random. We don’t recommend them just for fun. There’s usually a specific reason.
When plaque and tartar build up below your gum line, they cause inflammation. That inflammation is called gingivitis. If left untreated, it can turn into something more serious. Periodontal disease. That’s when your gums start pulling away from your teeth and creating pockets. Bacteria love those pockets. And over time, those pockets get deeper and deeper.
If we don’t step in, you can lose bone. And once you lose bone around your teeth, you can’t grow it back. That’s where the deep cleaning comes in. It stops the disease in its tracks before it causes permanent damage.
We know many patients dread this appointment, so here’s what you can expect:
The whole process usually takes two visits. We do one side of your mouth at a time so you can eat comfortably on the other side.
Your gums might feel a little sore for a day or two. That’s normal. Stick to softer foods, rinse with warm salt water, and take over-the-counter pain relievers if you need them.
Within a week or two, your gums should start to heal. They’ll get tighter, pinker, and healthier. You’ll notice less bleeding when you brush. And that bad taste or bad breath you might have had? That usually clears up too.
Gum disease is sneaky. It doesn’t always hurt. It doesn’t always look dramatic. But it’s the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. Not cavities. Not accidents. Gum disease.
A deep cleaning is your best defense. It stops the infection, saves your bone, and keeps your teeth where they belong. So when we recommend a deep cleaning, we’re not trying to sell you something. We’re trying to save your smile.
