All About Dental Implants from the Pomona Cosmetic Dentist

Missing teeth are a problem humans have been dealing with for ages. The first evidence of dental implants can actually be found in Mayan skulls dating from 600 A.D.: replacement teeth made from carved shells placed crudely into the jaw. It probably didn’t feel good, but it was (maybe) better than nothing.

Trends in dental implants continued throughout the next centuries, getting a little bit better with each one, until in the late 1960s an important discovery was made: osseointegration, or the process that makes today’s dental implants super-sturdy and highly effective at replacing teeth.

Osseointegration Provides a Stable Fit

It was an accidental find by physician and professor Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who discovered that the material titanium could safely fuse with bone to become a single unit — what we also call osseointegration. That’s the idea behind today’s dental implants, tiny titanium posts securely anchored into the space left by each missing tooth.

Dental Implants Procedure

The entire procedure for dental implants can take a while — up to eight months, most of which is spent allowing the implant and bone to osseointegrate. First, the dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, then allowed plenty of time to recover. Then, months and months later, the tops are exposed and your implants are ready to receive the new tooth replacement, which will be bonded securely on top.

The advantages of dental implants are many — especially in comparison to non-implant supported options. Some benefits include:

  • Increased oral health, preventing further tooth loss later on
  • Restored ability to speak, smile and eat as usual
  • A long lasting tooth replacement
  • No need to worry about an ill-fitting dental device
