Simon sez touch your nose! Simon sez touch your ears! Simon sez touch your temporomandibular joints! Aha! Gotcha! Most people have no idea where these joints are or what they do. Unless, of course, your temporomandibular joints don’t function properly, in which case you know exactly where they are because they hurt. These joints are located on either side of your head just in front of your ears. They are the joints that allow you to smoothly open and close your mouth, so you can eat, speak, smile, laugh and yawn. If your temporomandibular joints bother you, then you may have TMJ, or temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Don’t endure the pain another minute. Dr. Peter Auster is the Pomona general dentist at Cosmetic Dentistry Associates who can help with TMJ therapy.
There are a number of things that can cause TMJ. Sometimes a severe hit to the face, head or neck can play a role in TMJ. Most of the time, however, patients have a misaligned bite that affects the joint. A misaligned bite increases the stressors placed on teeth and TMJ joints, causing discomfort that ranges from chronic headaches to facial pain to broken or cracked teeth.
The symptoms of TMJ include:
- A sore jaw
- Clicking or popping when you open your mouth
- Facial swelling
- Misaligned teeth
- A stiff or locked feeling in your jaw
- The feeling of an earache or toothache in the absence of infection
New City TMJ Treatments
Dr. Auster will evaluate your jaw joint function to determine if you need TMJ therapy. A leading-edge tool called T-Scan III provides computerized occlusion analysis that determines optimal bite alignment. Once ideal positioning is determined, we can create a custom oral appliance to restore proper occlusion. You’ll wear this appliance at night while you sleep. Most patients experience relief of symptoms within a few weeks of when they begin to wear their appliances.
In lieu of an oral appliance, Dr. Auster may suggest building up the surface of back teeth with durable, all-white composite resin – a process called equilibration.
